CHICAGO, December 12, 2022 — One Design is honored to announce that two recent projects have been recognized through The Society of Typographic Arts’ prestigious 2022 STA 100 competition as among “the finest examples of communication design and typography created around the world.” Our work for Boston’s Commonwealth Pier and Refine Collective’s Juneteenth Freedom Market—a collaboration with Ebonee Wilkins-Castillo—received awards.

Boston’s landmark World Trade Center is in the process of being reborn as Commonwealth Pier, a new property owned by Pembroke in the heart of the city’s rapidly evolving Seaport District. Taking formal cues from the building’s industrial origins as a railway shipping hub, the brand system’s bespoke modular typeface draws inspiration from the ornate trusses and columns unearthed during the renovation.

A collaboration between One Design Company, Refine Collective, and Ebonee Wilkins-Castillo—we crafted a comprehensive brand expression for the 2022 Juneteenth Freedom Market at the MCA in Chicago.

Now in its 44th year, The Society of Typographic Arts’ STA 100 competition seeks to identify and honor the finest examples of communication design and typography created around the world. The competition jury selects and presents only the 100 best examples of typographic excellence produced in the previous year.

The 2022 jury of peer professionals—including Rick Griffith, Ben Blount, Yeohyun Ahn, and Rafaela Dražić—represents a wide range of experiences and expertise that demonstrate careers of depth and substance. While they are diverse in their experiences, they are united in that each has made and continues to make a significant commitment to teaching what they have learned and applied.

Since it was founded in Chicago on October 17, 1927, the STA has existed to encourage excellence and professionalism in all aspects of design, printing, and typography. Originally a chapter of the New York-based American Institute of Graphic Arts, in 1927 the Society of Typographic Arts created its own identity as an organization of Chicago’s leading professional designers, typographers, and printers.
