CHICAGO, AUGUST 29, 2022 — One Design is honored to announce that two recent projects have received Awards of Excellence by Communication Arts magazine, a celebrated professional journal for everyone involved in visual communications. The prestigious awards were given as part of the publication’s 63rd annual Design competition.
THE DETAILS
Our work for Arts Workers United and Jason Pontin was recognized among 143 winning selections from a pool of 3,284 entries. Check out the complete list of selections by browsing the winners gallery online.
Arts Workers United
Arts Worker United (AWU) is a lobbying organization focused on building awareness of and support for members of the creative class and their critical impact on the national economy. Founded during the COVID-19 pandemic, AWU works to ensure local and national governmental support for this critical—and often overlooked—sector of the working class.
We created a brand identity rooted in the visual vernacular of trade unions and craft guilds, that could flex to connect with politicians and arts workers alike. The AWU seal nods to sophistication, confidence, and solidarity. The extended visual language embraces a distinctive and powerful energy through color, layout, and imagery that connects with the creative class.
A system of typographic ligatures—custom glyphs built into a bespoke cut of Object Sans from Pangram Pangram—is a visual nod to the concept of support and unity.

Jason Pontin
Jason Pontin—former editor of the MIT Tech Review, amongst other prestigious publications—desired an online home to archive and present his vast catalog of content.
We crafted a powerfully conceptual brand language for the polymath, combining an endlessly evolving array of illustration—created to represent his wide range of interests and areas of expertise—with an unabashedly confident toolkit of sans serif typography and rich color.
His new digital home became an homage to the printed page, leveraging graphic layering and editorial sensibility to create a rich, engaging, and supremely navigable reading experience online.
