Introducing Leitmotif, an independent venture capital firm bridging the innovation ecosystems of the US and Europe.

Co-founded by Matt Trevithick and Jens Wiese in 2023, the firm aims to build a better world by empowering extraordinary startups to accelerate the transition from technical proof to commercial scale.

The One Design team worked closely with Matt and Jens to help launch the brand, crafting a stunningly sophisticated identity program. From the core identity system through a website and a suite of communications materials, we helped the Leitmotif team announce their vision to the world on their one-year anniversary.

A north star bridging worlds

The Leitmotif logomark is an expression of the firm’s role as a bridge—a symbol of their ability to build transatlantic connections between investors and entrepreneurs, industry and innovation, proof of concept and commercial scale. Leitmotif is a link between the reality of today and a vision for a better world tomorrow.

The form also alludes to the power and symbolism of the North Star’s guiding light—a visual reference to the definition of their name, which means “to lead” in German.

Colophon’s Fold Grotesque functions as the backbone of the graphic toolkit. A neo-grotesque typeface, Fold conveys a matter-of-fact, rational sense of strength without abandoning subtle, unique gestures and a pleasant sense of rhythm, alluding to the unique point of view of the firm.

The understated, restrained color palette reinforces the firm’s rational approach and sophisticated personality. A suite of powerful photographic landscapes ground Leitmotif’s ambitious vision for the planet in the physical world around us.

Leitmotif has already been hard at work, identifying entrepreneurs and teams with the vision, skill, and might to change the world. The firm’s portfolio—showcased on the website we built to support their launch—already contains a growing list of formidable investments.
